Painted church in Asinou / © cips/vidaluzThe inconspicuous church of Asinou with its steep-pitched roof is typical of an architectural phenomenon in the Troodos mountains. Ten of these Byzantine churches dating from the 11th to the 17th century are protected by UNESCO’s World Heritage List due to their outstanding style and their gloriously colourful frescos. Particularly worth mentioning are the churches Panagia Forviótissa in Asinou, Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis in Kakopetria, Archangelos Michail in Pedoulas, Agios Ioannis Lampadistis in Kalopanagiotis and  Panagia tou Araka in Lagoudera.
